We said goodbye to our dear friend Pete this week. No one who knew Pete had a bad word to say about him. You have to ask how many people you’ll encounter in life that you can genuinely say that about. My life along with countless others has been made immeasurably richer by knowing him and being lucky enough to call him our friend. We bonded over Love ‘Forever Changes’ and 35 years on, it will remain for me the greatest piece of art ever produced. Pete made everyone in his presence feel happy. His devotion to his friends never wavered. Pete was funny, warm, never judgemental with a heart bigger than Manchester. I loved Pete. I adored him. I was happy city won the treble because I knew what it meant to Pete. He set up a Stojiljkovic Tribe WhatsApp group in lockdown so we could still chat about music and TV and films, with messages about Beatles mono vs stereo mixes, his enthusiasm for music was infectious. He and Elly were made honorary Stojiljkovic’s. The Pete Garner autobiography never did happen, but those that knew him will always cherish and belly laugh at the crazy stories that have enriched our lives over the years. We heard many of them this week but a thousand more are held close to our hearts.
All my memories of Pete are happy ones.
See you on the other side brother and say hi to Cheeky bird for me. Your beautiful family and your friends all love you so very dearly.
